Daily Driver car ideas

They are still sticking to their story of better than 30mpg. I just don't want another 1500 sized truck if I can help it. 15mpg or so for the 95% of my driving sucks. I won't be getting a new colorado, not so much because of it being a small truck but because I can't afford it. No matter how hard I try I can't part with $40k+ to get a new car. Crap I struggle to let go of $20k for a used one. I think in the end I will keep this stupid suburban because the value on it has plummeted since I bought it. Once things catch up I will dump it for a wagon and a class C camper so the family can go to the mountains and the beach whenever we want. My wife isn't on-board for camping without her own facilities, and I am working way to hard to sleep in a tent unless I have to.

I'm joining this thread a little late, but I just started the search for a new commuter car today as well. I accepted a job at SRS so I'm looking at 36 miles 1 way to work each day. My truck would be fine, but I really just don't want to start racking up miles on it. Along with this, we are planning to sell my wife's Liberty rather than having 4 cars in our driveway. If we were keeping that, I'd be looking for a crap box for a couple grand, but since we are essentially replacing her car I need something nicer.

So far I've checked out a few cars. Front runners are a TDI Sportwagen, and a Subaru Crosstrek. I looked at a couple sedans (Jetta, meh, and Passat, which was really nice), but I want something I can fold the seats down and my dogs can relax in. That pretty much means SUV (which generally don't get the mileage I'd like) or wagon. Heading out to test drive both front runners this morning.
Friend of mine picked up a crosstrek recently bc he travels a lot for work and likes it a lot. Says it gets great mileage.

My biggest gripe with it is its small. Zero trunk space and it fits 4 adults comfortably but you'd cramped trying to pack anything else in it. Although I've never owned a Subaru I've always liked them, but I think the early to mid 2000s were the best for them bc now they are all practically the same size. Ride by a lot and the crosstrek and forester look pretty much the same where the forester use to have a lot more headroom going for it which I liked. My wife was wanting an outback or forester but with a 150lb Great Dane there's not really a car he will fit in easily which is a pain. Add a small boxer to the mix to and we need a sprinter van almost to go anywhere.

I love those sportwagens and know of people who average around 50mpg with them. Damn near every other person in Greenville has one it seems.

I would drive the heck of out a new Colorado. The new Nissan Frontier coming is badass too. I'm big, but I like a midsize truck.

Steve, the crosstreks look great but holy crap they are under-powered. The saturn took one to school at rally cross. Their 0-60 is significantly slower than a wrangler.

If I went car, it would definitely be a tdi vdub wagon.

Thanks for the feedback. We are pretty set on the tdi Sportwagen now. There is one that I like but it's got ~64k miles and my wife doesn't care for the color. I've got Carmax bringing another one in from Atlanta that's got 33k miles but it's a year older. I'll probably pick between those 2.

My mom drives 2010 VW wagon TDi. It gets around 39 on hwy. My old man has looked into the new Colorado, but he won't get one

They're turds driving for sure but that's probably why they're so good on gas. I think Lesbaru considers it there entry level car. They look good.

I love a midsize for how functional they are driving and parking where a full size can be a bitch. A 4door taco long bed would be a great truck. Fuel mileage is usually just is bad if not worse then a 1/2 ton though It seems.

New colorados look to funny for me. Saw one yesterday and like the older style better. They can be had with the 5.3 but I've never seen one.

And I really don't understand why...

A Colorado is a turd of a truck. They ride like crap. Interior is extremely cheap feeling to me... Which most small trucks are cheap feeling to me...
