2001 AW4 into 1992 XJ speed sensor question

Have a built 1992 XJ with bad AW4 and a donor 2001 XJ with bad motor and good AW4. Speed sensors are different. Can the speed sensor be left disconnected and the transmission shift properly? I realize the speedometer won’t work but it’s a crawler and not an issue. Thanks!

I think you're going to need the vss, but not positive. This looks like a good resource.
